The African American Women's Resource Center, Inc. is a non profit organization created in 1994 to develop, support and maintain policies, programs, projects and activities which inform, educate, empower and celebrate girls and women of the African Diaspora and their communities. The Resource Center serves as a clearinghouse for resource access, referrals, and the storage and dissemination of information for and about women of the African Diaspora. Current programs inlcude the We Are the Ones! Afterschool Program for Girls, the Youth Each-One-Teach-One Internet Access Program, and the U Street Walking Tour.

 

 
 

Sisterspace and Books, founded in 1994, is the only bookstore in the nation specializing in books by and about African American women. Sisterspace and Books is committed to the preservation and promotion of African American women's voices. In addition to reading, discussions, writing workshops, and art exhibitions. Sisterspace and Books is home to several book clubs, including a program for hearing impaired girls, and shares its space with The African American Women's Resource Center and other community based organizations for educational workshops, meetings and events relevant to the members of its communities.
